Murder Mystery Game for 2 Players

Every other murder mystery needs somebody to run it. Somebody reads the solution first, hands out the clues, and spends the evening watching everyone else play. With two people that does not work — one of you would have to sit the whole thing out.

This one has no host. You open five sealed envelopes together, argue about what the evidence means, and find out whether you were right before you open the answer.

★ HOW IT WORKS ★

Six people were unaccounted for when the library door was locked. Each sealed envelope rules out exactly one of them — but never by telling you which. You read the evidence and decide together, out loud, who it clears. Five envelopes, five names crossed off, one name left standing.

★ THE PART THAT MAKES IT A DATE, NOT A PUZZLE ★

Every envelope is locked by a question about each other, and both of you answer out loud before the evidence opens. No score, no right answer, nothing to win — just five questions neither of you has been asked before. "When did one of you last cover for the other, and did they ever find out?"

That is the lock. The mystery is what you do after it.

★ YOU FIND OUT IF YOU ARE RIGHT BEFORE YOU OPEN THE ANSWER ★

Every suspect has a letter printed beside their name. Cross a name off, copy their letter across, and when all five boxes are full the letters spell one word. If they do not spell anything, one of your eliminations is wrong — and you find that out while you can still go back and argue, instead of on the last page.

The letters belong to the NAMES, not to the envelopes. That is what makes the check real: one wrong cross and the word breaks.

One envelope needs a number from an earlier one, so keep them. One needs arithmetic you do out loud. And one contains a piece of evidence that appears to clear somebody and does not — it is not marked, it is not flagged, and the only thing that catches it is the word not spelling.
