October 1979. A jury has been out four days and is locked in a hotel: twelve rooms on one floor, an officer on a chair at the stair head all night, the telephones taken out. The vote has been eleven to one since Monday and the holdout will not move. On Wednesday night five of them sit in the lounge, and at half past ten one of them says out loud that somebody ought to go and look in his room. Nobody answers. They all go to bed. At seven the chambermaid finds him.
