★ MURDER AT THE NORTHERN CHRONICLE — a newsroom whodunit for 4-12 players ★
Get it on Etsy → Instant digital download · print at homeOctober 1974. The back page has been held since five o'clock and nobody on the stone has been told why. At twenty to nine the editor comes out of the wire room, shouts one sentence across the newsroom over two teleprinters and a propped door, and shuts his office door behind him. At a quarter past nine his deputy finds him.
Six people heard that sentence. Every one of them is honest and no two of them heard the same words. This game is not about catching a liar — it is about reassembling four seconds of noise, out of what all six versions share and the exact word where they come apart.
• The chief sub, who cut a paragraph out of a reporter's story on orders and never said so
• The reporter, taken off his own two-year story in August by the man now dead
• The editor's secretary, thirty years outside that door, who keeps the diary to the minute
• The father of the chapel, with a strike ballot in his coat for Monday
• The deputy editor, passed over in the spring and gracious about it in public
• The advertising manager, running the best October in the paper's history
⚠️ You need a board or a big sheet of paper for this one. In Round 1 the host writes all six versions up word for word and leaves them there — it is the only game in the line that needs a prop, and it is the entire design.
• 12 painted character portraits, one on every character sheet
• A "Meet Your Characters" page so your guests can see the whole floor at a glance
• A painted cover of the stone as it was found that night
Nobody hands out a plain sheet of text any more. Your guests get a face to play.
